What It Is

Woven Grass, Real Texture, No Two Rolls Alike

Grasscloth is exactly what the name says: natural grasses, jute, sisal or arrowroot, hand-woven and mounted on a paper backing. The result is texture no printed paper can fake, with natural color variation from strand to strand and roll to roll. That variation is the entire point, and the thing nobody warns you about.

The seams do not pattern-match like printed paper, because there is no pattern. Panels read as deliberate columns of woven material, which is part of the look. A good installer plans the panel layout so the rhythm feels intentional; a careless one leaves you counting seams. This is the material where the installer matters most.

Where It Belongs

The Right Rooms and the Wrong Ones

Yes: Dining Rooms

Warmth, depth and candlelight were made for woven texture. The classic grasscloth room for a reason.

Yes: Offices and Bedrooms

Calm, tactile and quietly expensive-looking. Grasscloth also softens sound, which these rooms appreciate.

Careful: Hallways

Beautiful, but shoulders and backpacks brush hallway walls daily and natural fiber does not love friction. We tell you honestly if yours is too tight.

No: Splash Zones

Behind sinks, inside showers, behind the stove. Water spots natural fiber permanently. Powder rooms work; wet walls do not.

Living With It

Care, Honestly Stated

Grasscloth asks two things of you: dust it gently now and then, and never scrub it with water. Stains do not wipe out of natural fiber the way they wipe off vinyl. Households with young kids and enthusiastic dogs sometimes choose a faux grasscloth instead: modern vinyl versions capture most of the look and shrug off real life. We carry both conversations without judgment, and we tell you which one fits your actual household.

"He matched the pattern, no visible seams, and the curve is artfully executed."

Questions We Hear

Grasscloth FAQ

Why do grasscloth seams show?
Because there is no repeating pattern to hide them. Seams read as part of the woven look. Good installation plans the panel rhythm so it feels deliberate, and that is the difference between designed and disappointing.
Is grasscloth good for bathrooms?
Powder rooms without showers, yes, and it looks spectacular there. Full bathrooms with steam and splash zones, no. Faux grasscloth vinyl is the right call for wet rooms.
Does grasscloth work on textured walls?
It prefers smooth walls. Its own texture is the star, and wall texture underneath competes with it. We give your walls an honest read first, and skim coating is quoted transparently when needed. More in our textured walls guide.
Real or faux grasscloth?
Real for low-touch, adult rooms where the depth matters. Faux for households where walls get touched, splashed and leaned on. Both install beautifully when done right.
What does grasscloth installation cost?
Installation starts at $400 and natural materials sit above entry-level papers in labor, because they demand more care. Send photos and the material you are considering, and you receive an exact written number within one business day.
