The Texture Question

Can You Wallpaper Textured Walls? An Honest Answer

Most Sacramento homes have textured walls, and most wallpaper advice online pretends they do not exist. Here is the truth about orange peel, knockdown and heavy texture, from installers who read walls for a living.

Send photos of your wall and get a straight answer, plus an exact written quote, within one business day.

The Short Answer

Often Yes. Sometimes After Smoothing. Never by Pretending.

Texture is not a dealbreaker, it is a variable. Light orange peel, the most common finish in Sacramento-area homes, works with more papers than people expect. Heavier knockdown and skip trowel usually need smoothing before fine papers will look right. The one approach that always fails is ignoring the texture and hoping: thin papers over heavy texture telegraph every bump the moment the light rakes across the wall at sunset.

That is why our process starts with a read of your actual wall, not a promise. Sometimes the answer is a texture-friendly paper installed as-is. Sometimes it is skim coating first, priced as its own transparent line. We tell you which one you have before you spend a dollar.

Know Your Wall

The Three Levels of Texture

Light Orange Peel

A fine, even stipple. Thicker patterned papers, textured vinyls and many non-wovens install beautifully over it with proper priming.

Knockdown and Medium

Flattened mottled patches. Some forgiving materials work; smooth papers and anything glossy will show it. This is case-by-case territory.

Heavy and Skip Trowel

Bold, sculptural texture. Smoothing first is almost always the honest recommendation, and the result is worth it.

Smooth or Skim Coated

The blank canvas. Every material on the table, from delicate grasscloth to seamless murals.

Your Two Paths

Work With the Texture, or Remove It

Path one: texture-friendly papers. Thicker materials with pattern and depth cooperate with light texture instead of exposing it. Faux grasscloth, textured vinyls and busy organic patterns are the workhorses here. Lower cost, faster install, honest limits: under harsh side light, faint texture may still whisper through, and we will tell you exactly how much before you choose.

Path two: skim coat to smooth. A thin layer of compound is applied over the texture, sanded flat and primed, turning your wall into that blank canvas. It adds a prep line to the quote, and it unlocks every material that exists, including the fine papers and murals that make design magazines. For the wall your guests will photograph, smoothing is usually the money best spent on the whole project.

Questions We Hear

Textured Wall FAQ

Will peel-and-stick wallpaper work on my textured wall?
Usually not well. Peel-and-stick needs smooth, clean surfaces to grip; on texture it bubbles, lifts at the seams and peels early. Traditional papers with proper adhesive handle texture far better.
How do I know which texture level I have?
Send us two photos: one straight on, one at a sharp angle in daylight. The angled shot shows the shadows, and the shadows tell the story. You get an honest read within one business day.
Does skim coating make a mess?
It is dusty work when done carelessly, which is why prep matters: floors and furniture covered, dust controlled, and the room cleaned before paper goes up. The wall ends up smooth, primed and better than new construction.
Can I just install over old wallpaper instead?
We do not recommend it. Old paper telegraphs its seams and can release under the new adhesive, taking your investment with it. Proper removal, repair and primer is what makes the new wall last.
What does this cost?
Installation starts at $400, and skim coating, when your wall needs it, is quoted as its own transparent line. Photos in, exact written number out within one business day.
