The Honest Guide

How to Remove Wallpaper Without Ruining Your Walls

Written by people who remove wallpaper for a living in Sacramento. Here is how to do it yourself properly, and how to know, before you start, whether your wall is the kind that turns a Saturday project into a drywall repair bill.

Too many layers? Painted over? We remove practically everything. Photos in, exact quote out within one business day.

Before You Start

First, Find Out What You Are Dealing With

Every removal disaster we get called to rescue started the same way: someone began pulling before knowing what was on the wall. Spend five minutes on diagnosis first. Lift a corner near an outlet or behind furniture. If the top layer peels away dry and leaves a paper backing, you have a modern peelable paper and a manageable weekend. If nothing lifts, if you find layer under layer, or if the paper has been painted over, stop and read the last section of this guide before touching anything else.

The Method

The Four Steps, Done Properly

Step 01

Protect and Prep

Cover floors, tape plastic over outlets, kill power to the wall if you will use much water. Removal is wet, drippy work and glue stains what it touches.

Step 02

Peel the Top Layer

Pull the facing off dry where it allows, low and slow, at an angle. Whatever backing stays on the wall is normal. Never gouge with a rigid scraper against dry paper.

Step 03

Soak and Strip the Backing

Warm water with stripper solution, applied generously and given time to soak. Work in sections, keep the wall wet, and let the moisture do the work your arms want to rush.

Step 04

Wash Off Every Trace of Glue

The step everyone skips and always regrets. Residue left on the wall makes paint crackle and new paper fail. Wash until the wall no longer feels slick when damp.

After the Paper Is Off

Primer and Repair Are Not Optional

A stripped wall is not a finished wall. Fill the dings, sand the patches, and then seal everything with a quality primer. Priming is what turns a wall that survived removal into a wall that is genuinely smooth and ready for paint or new wallpaper. Skip it and every flaw telegraphs through whatever comes next.

The Honest Part

When to Put the Scraper Down and Call Us

Some walls are simply not weekend projects. Painted-over wallpaper, where paint has sealed the surface against water. Multiple layers stacked across decades. Paper glued straight to unprimed drywall, where aggressive scraping tears the wall itself. These are the jobs where a rescue costs more than doing it right from the start would have.

This is our daily work. We remove practically everything, including the walls other companies decline, wash off the adhesive completely and recommend the right repair and primer so you end up with a smooth wall instead of a war story. Send photos and you will know the exact cost within one business day.

Questions We Hear

Wallpaper Removal FAQ

Does vinegar or fabric softener really work?
Household mixes can loosen light adhesives, and dedicated stripper solutions work more consistently. Whatever you use, the real secret is patience: keep the backing properly wet and give it time to soak.
Should I rent a steamer?
Steamers help on stubborn paper, and they also cook drywall paper if held too long in one spot. If your wall needs a steamer to make progress, that is often the sign the project belongs with a professional.
I tore the drywall. How bad is it?
Small tears in the paper face are repairable with sealing primer and joint compound. Widespread tearing means the wall needs real repair before anything else. Stop before it spreads and get an honest read from a pro.
Can you remove wallpaper that was painted over?
Yes. It is the hardest removal there is and we handle it regularly. There is no situation we walk away from: if there is wallpaper on the wall, we can take it down.
What does professional removal cost in Sacramento?
It depends on square footage, layers and how the paper was installed, quoted as its own transparent line. Send photos through the quote form and you receive an exact written number within one business day.
